Amelia is a Student Veterinary Nurse at Alexander Vets. Her love of animals and dedication to becoming an RVN is embodied in her daily work with the practice, as part of a friendly and supportive team.
Since I was little, I've always known that I wanted to work with animals. Growing up, I was fortunate to have a variety of pets, from birds and dogs to cats, fish, and even mice. After completing my GCSEs, I embarked on a year-long animal management course at Lancaster and Morecambe College. During the course, I did a placement at Alexander Vets, and after it ended, I was offered a permanent position. Now, I'm doing my nurse training at Myerscough College.
Coming into work each day always means encountering new cases, meeting both old and new clients, and, of course, spending time with our furry friends. I love getting to know both the animals and their owners.
Our practice is relatively small but very modern. I love the layout, with specialized areas like the x-ray room, operating theatre, prep room, separate kennels, and four consult rooms. We're a close team who work really well together, always ready to help each other out and share a laugh.
We handle routine cases daily, such as vaccinations, neutering, and health checks. While we often see lump removals and dentals, more advanced cases are usually referred. We also conduct a lot of in-house testing.
I enjoy the aftercare of patients and client interactions, making sure both animals and owners have a positive experience. Ensuring a stress-free experience for our patients is really important to me, so I focus on that a lot too. The lab work is fascinating too—I love running and taking bloods, urinalysis, using a microscope, and examining blood smears.
I live just over the bridge in Walney Island, a five-minute drive away. It has a beautiful beach and plenty of restaurants. The local town, though small, is always bustling with activity. There are gyms, a cinema, and a good variety of shops. Ulverston, about 20 minutes away, is also a lovely place to explore.
I love spending time with my family, boyfriend, and my cat, Socks. Despite not being a cat person initially, I got him last year, and he's become an unpredictable but wonderful part of my life. I also have two guinea pigs, George and Percy, who are adorable despite not always getting along. They bring a lot of joy and companionship to my life. In my free time, I enjoy going shopping and trying out new restaurants, and I'm a regular at the gym and swimming pool.
I'm proud to be in this job and being chosen for the course at Myerscough College. Feeling trusted by my colleagues also means a lot to me.
We have an excellent opportunity for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our team here at Alexander Vets. We are a well-established and popular small animal practice who work to the highest standards.
We see various caseloads enabling you to split your time evenly between consults and operations with medical and clinical freedom to work up your cases as well as sole charge work. We can see a fair amount of dental work as well as cases with patients with arthritis and hyperthyroidism enabling regular case work ups with our IDEXX lab station. We have a visiting cardiologist Ben Griffiths that comes when more complex cases arise and means our vets can be more involved to build their knowledge and skillset in this area.We fully encourage and support you to pursue additional certificates.
