A Hospital-Based Role With Variety, Support and Real Clinical Scope

Brittas Veterinary Hospital is a well-established, 100% small animal hospital in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, and we’re looking for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly, close-knit team. This is a role that offers genuine clinical variety, strong teamwork and the opportunity to work cases properly, within a supportive hospital environment that values balance as much as standards.

Whether you’re looking for a full-time position or something more flexible, we’re happy to have an open conversation about what works best for you.

The Practice and Caseload

Brittas is a two-site small animal hospital seeing a mix of first- and second-opinion cases, as well as providing referral services to neighbouring practices. Our caseload includes routine and more complex surgeries, diagnostic work-ups and ongoing medical cases, giving plenty of clinical depth for vets who enjoy variety. The hospital is a large, well-equipped premises with ample parking and excellent facilities, including multiple consulting rooms, a dedicated ultrasound room, digital radiography, dental equipment and a well-organised theatre setup. We also work closely with a local charity on a neutering scheme, which adds another rewarding dimension to the role.

Our team currently consists of three veterinary surgeons, including one with an advanced certificate in medicine, supported by experienced registered veterinary nurses and a strong support team. Knowledge sharing is actively encouraged, and senior vets are always happy to support, discuss cases and pass on expertise.

The Role Day to Day

This position suits a vet who is confident with first-opinion consultations and routine surgery, and who enjoys working as part of a collaborative team while also being comfortable using their own initiative.

There is flexibility within the role, with both part-time and full-time options available. A part-time position would involve working three days per week (24 hours), with shifts running from 8:30am to 5:30pm. A full-time position follows the same working pattern across the week, with a total of 40 hours.

The rota includes one weeknight on-call duty and a shared weekend rota of one in five weekends, consisting of Saturday morning clinics and on-call cover on Sundays.

We’re happy to discuss flexibility around working patterns for the right candidate, ensuring a balance that works for both you and the practice.

A Team That Feels Like a Team

At Brittas, we genuinely see ourselves as more than just colleagues. The team is supportive, approachable and committed to helping each other deliver the best possible care. There’s a strong belief here that good medicine and surgery go hand-in-hand with a healthy work–life balance, and that vets do their best work when they feel supported and valued. You’ll be joining an environment where communication is open, questions are welcomed, and development is encouraged at every stage.

Who This Role Will Suit

This role is ideal for a VCI-registered Veterinary Surgeon with at least a couple of years’ experience in small animal practice. You’ll be confident handling routine consultations and surgeries, comfortable in a hospital setting, and keen to continue developing your skills with the support of an experienced team.

We’re looking for someone who is friendly, professional, and enjoys being part of a practice where teamwork and patient care come first. This position is not suitable for new graduates or those requiring mentorship.
