Start Your Mixed Practice Career the Right Way

If you’re a newly qualified or early-career mixed veterinary surgeon looking for proper hands-on experience, real mentorship, and a supportive team, Gorey Veterinary Hospital offers an outstanding place to learn, grow, and build confidence as a mixed practitioner.

Based in the heart of Wexford’s beautiful southeast, this is a rare opportunity to join a busy, well-established mixed practice where learning is encouraged, support is available, and junior vets are set up to succeed. Any prior experience or confidence with routine consults, surgery, or farm work is a bonus, but attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn matter most.

A Mixed Role With Structure, Support & Variety

This role offers a true mixed caseload, with approximately 70% small animal and 30% large animal, making it ideal for a graduate or junior vet who wants broad exposure without being overwhelmed.

You’ll gain experience across:
  • Small animal consultations and routine surgery
  • Farm work including herd and flock health, fertility work, calvings, lambings, TB testing and emergencies
  • Developing confidence in both clinical decision-making and practical skills

  • You’ll work alongside experienced colleagues who enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge, with support always available as you build independence at your own pace.

    Work–Life Balance That Actually Works

We know how important balance is, especially early in your career.
  • Shared OOH with a neighbouring clinic
  • 1 in 10 weekends and only 1–2 nights on call in 10
  • Time off in lieu after weekends and Saturday mornings
  • Weekday shifts: 8.30am–5.30pm or 10.30am–7.30pm
  • Saturdays: 9.30am–2.30pm
  • You’ll be supported into sole charge gradually, with guidance available whenever needed.

Learn in a Busy, Supportive Hospital Environment

Gorey Veterinary Hospital is a purpose-built, modern practice with a strong reputation locally and a genuinely friendly team culture.

Facilities include digital radiography, ultrasound, and well-equipped surgical areas, giving you the tools you need to practise confidently and safely.

You’ll be joining a close-knit team of 4.5 vets, 2 nurses, 2 ACAs and 3 receptionists, all committed to collaboration, learning, and high standards of care. The practice also works closely with the NWSPCA, offering valuable exposure to welfare-focused veterinary work.

Who This Role Is Perfect For

    This position is ideal for:
  • New graduates or junior mixed vets
  • VCI-registered or VCI-eligible veterinary surgeons
  • Vets keen to build confidence in routine consults, surgery, and farm work
  • Someone enthusiastic, approachable, and eager to learn

  • If you already have some experience or confidence with routine clinical skills, that’s a great advantage - but full support and training are provided regardless.
