Old Church Vets is seeking a Mixed Veterinary Surgeon to join our established and progressive team in Donegal. This role is ideally suited to a vet who already has some experience in mixed practice and is looking for a position that offers clinical variety, professional development, and the support of a highly collaborative team.
We are proud to provide a genuine mixed caseload, combining companion animal medicine and surgery with farm animal work and a small amount of equine. Whether your passion lies in developing your farm animal expertise, advancing your surgical skills, or maintaining a broad mixed caseload, this role offers the opportunity to build the career you want.
This is a varied role with the majority of day-to-day work focused on companion animal consultations, diagnostics, and surgery. Alongside this, you will work with local farming clients, predominantly in suckler beef and sheep enterprises, while also seeing occasional equine cases.
Our caseload provides the diversity and clinical challenge that many mixed practitioners value, allowing you to retain and develop skills across multiple species while building strong relationships with clients and the local farming community.
You will become part of a friendly and experienced team consisting of eight veterinary surgeons, five registered veterinary nurses, and a dedicated support team.
We foster a culture where collaboration, shared learning, and clinical discussion are part of daily practice. Support is always available, but experienced vets are encouraged to work with autonomy while benefiting from the knowledge and expertise of their colleagues.
Our main hospital, located in a beautifully converted 19th-century church in Donegal Town, combines character with modern veterinary medicine.
The practice is equipped with a full IDEXX laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, and orthopaedic surgical facilities. These resources allow us to provide high-quality diagnostics and treatment while giving our vets the opportunity to manage cases thoroughly and pursue areas of clinical interest.
We recognise the importance of a sustainable work-life balance and have structured our rota to support both professional satisfaction and personal wellbeing.
Out-of-hours responsibilities are shared across the veterinary team, with support always available when required. This provides a balanced approach to emergency and farm work while ensuring vets feel confident and supported when managing more complex cases.
Donegal offers an exceptional quality of life, with stunning coastlines, mountains, beaches, and outdoor activities right on your doorstep. The region combines breathtaking scenery with welcoming communities and an affordable lifestyle, making it an excellent location for anyone seeking a rewarding veterinary career without compromising on quality of life.
We are keen to hear from veterinary surgeons who enjoy the variety and challenges of mixed practice and who value working as part of a supportive team.
Applicants must be registered, or eligible to register, with the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI). Previous experience in mixed practice is desirable, although we are open to considering candidates with strong experience in either farm animal or companion animal practice who are keen to maintain and develop mixed practice skills.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, adaptable, client-focused, and committed to delivering excellent clinical care.
Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll benefit from a package designed to support both your professional growth and personal wellbeing including:
22 days Annual Leave & Birthday leave
Paid Maternity, Paternity & Adoptive Leave Packages
Cycle to Work Scheme
Full access to EAP and Wellbeing Centre
