We are looking to hire a new cardiology intern!
We have a unique opportunity for a veterinary surgeon to join our cardiology team at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists. You will be supervised and work alongside two ECVIM EBVS-boarded cardiology specialists. In addition to our specialists, the team includes a second year ECVIM resident-in-training, two dedicated cardiology nurses and a veterinary care assistant. Our internship programme will provide you with the basis to go on to achieve a residency programme and specialist status in the future. We are extremely proud of our track record, with past interns gaining residencies in both the UK and North America.
Job Description
A one-year full-time contract in a large, multi-disciplinary referral hospital in Hampshire. You will be involved in the day-to-day running in the cardiology service and will have primary case responsibility under specialist supervision. You will acquire skills in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, ECG interpretation and helping the team review and manage a variety of routine and complex cases. You will acquire hands-on, technical experience with cardiac interventional procedures including balloon valvuloplasty, PDA occlusion, pacemaker implantation and pulmonary stenting, and you will also have exposure to complex cardiac interventions that go beyond the typical congenital cardiac cases.
The cardiology team provides an out-of-hours cardiology service to the local area and you will be involved in providing this service, participating in an OOH rota for the entire hospital, shared between all interns.
You will take part in regular journal clubs, book clubs and seminars. There will also be ample teaching opportunities within the hospital, including ECG clubs for nurses and other interns if time allows. Although not essential, we also encourage our interns to get involved in clinical research during their time at SCVS.

A veterinary degree registerable with RCVS
A strong interest in veterinary cardiology and plans to train towards a specialist status in veterinary cardiology following the internship
Completed a rotating internship (or equivalent experience in veterinary practice)
Some post-graduate clinical experience in small animal cardiology
Basic experience with echocardiography is helpful but not essential
Most importantly, we feel the candidate should be a team player and enthusiastic to learn more about cardiology
