Fyrnwy Equine Clinic has an exciting opportunity for an Equine Intern to join their team. This will be a 18-month internship programme starting for August 2026 (later start date can be considered)
Fyrnwy Equine Clinic is a specialist equine veterinary practice providing both a highly experienced ambulatory service and a fully equipped surgical referral centre. As a BEVA-approved internship practice, we are committed to developing the next generation of equine vets while delivering exceptional care to our patients. Our purpose-built hospital in Baschurch, near Shrewsbury, offers outstanding facilities, including advanced diagnostic imaging, an in-house laboratory, operating theatre, reproduction suite, specialist stabling, and extensive rehabilitation paddocks, enabling us to provide comprehensive medical and surgical care.
Our friendly and supportive team is spread across two sites and includes 19 equine vets, among them a European Specialist, an American Diplomate and two CertAVPs. We are supported by experienced equine veterinary nurses, student nurses, yard technicians, and a dedicated clinic and administration team, all working collaboratively to provide the highest standard of care for our patients and clients.
At inspiring vet care, our people are at the heart of everything we do. As the UK’s number one vet care provider, we're trusted with the care of over 2 million animals, delivering our purpose of healthier animals and happier owners.
As a Veterinary Intern, you will gain valuable exposure to a referral or advanced clinical environment, working collaboratively with experienced veterinary surgeons, nurses, and support teams to deliver high-quality patient and client care.
This role is designed to support your clinical development, build confidence in managing more complex cases, and deepen your understanding of evidence-based veterinary medicine. You’ll actively participate in ward rounds, case discussions, and clinical governance activities, while being supported by senior clinicians and mentors.
Working Pattern
This role follows a varied four-week rotating schedule, providing an excellent balance of hospital-based and ambulatory equine practice. During Weeks 1 and 3, you will be based in our clinic, where you will contribute to inpatient care, assist with surgical procedures, perform general anaesthesia, and take part in lameness investigations. You'll also gain experience using our extensive diagnostic facilities, including MRI, ultrasonography, digital wireless radiography, endoscopy, gastroscopy, and in-house laboratory diagnostics. These weeks include participation in a shared clinic on-call rota.
Weeks 2 and 4 are spent in our ambulatory service, delivering high-quality care to patients in the field. Week 2 focuses on routine and emergency ambulatory work, including preventative healthcare, dentistry, passporting, stud work during the breeding season, and emergency call-outs. We actively encourage interns to take responsibility for their own cases, with continuity of care when patients are referred into the clinic. Week 4 is dedicated to the ambulatory out-of-hours rota, covering emergencies from 5:00 pm to 8:00 am while being off during the day. A dedicated and experienced second on-call vet is always available to provide support and advice.
Key Responsibilities
As an intern, you will play an active role in all aspects of equine veterinary practice, including inpatient care, anaesthesia, surgery, lameness work-ups, advanced diagnostic imaging, and laboratory diagnostics. You will also develop your ambulatory skills through routine preventative care, emergency medicine, stud work, and case management in the field. Throughout the programme, you'll be encouraged to build confidence, develop clinical decision-making skills, and take ownership of your cases, while working alongside an experienced and supportive team committed to your professional development.
You are a motivated and enthusiastic veterinary surgeon who is keen to develop their clinical skills within a supportive referral or advanced-care setting. You’ll bring:
A Veterinary degree and registration with the RCVS
Experience working as part of a clinical veterinary team
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload effectively
Clear and confident communication skills with a collaborative approach to teamwork
A positive and proactive attitude to learning and development
An interest in evidence-based veterinary medicine and clinical best practice
Professionalism, resilience, and the ability to remain calm in a busy clinical environment
