Ian Jennings Becomes UK’s First AP in Veterinary Neurology

February 10, 2025

Ian Jennings, Veterinary Surgeon at Rowe Vets, has been recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as the first UK vet to earn Advanced Practitioner (AP) status in Veterinary Neurology.

The newly established designation acknowledges Ian’s seven years of experience in neurology, neuropathology and neurosurgery

Achieving Advanced Practicioner status

Gaining AP status from the RCVS is often a lifetime achievement for many veterinary surgeons. To achieve an AP qualification, veterinarians must follow a rigorous eighteen-month application process with RCVS.

In addition to holding a veterinary surgeon qualification for five years, the applicant must have at least five years of clinical experience and a postgraduate degree in their chosen field. Finally, applicants must undergo over 200 hours of CPD and develop a professional portfolio with various case studies.

How Ian became an AP in Veterinary Neurology

Ian Jennings first joined Rowe Referrals’ first opinion team in Bristol in 2007. He qualified from Melbourne University in 2004 after first completing a neuroscience degree at Edinburgh University.

With a keen interest in the use of MRIs in treating spine and brain problems in pets, Ian has become an expert in this field over his 20 years of practice. Ian now plays a key role in developing and running Rowe’s referral imaging services, ensuring swift on-site assessments.

Commenting on the recognition, Ian said:

“Personally this achievement is incredibly rewarding, but I also see it as an important step for veterinary neurology in the UK. It’s a fast-growing field with an increasing need for expert treatment and care so it’s exciting to see it recognised at this level.”

Praise for Veterinary Neurologist, Ian

Kirsten McLeod, Referrals Operations Director at IVC Evidensia, added:

“Ian’s accomplishment is a testament to his dedication and passion for advancing veterinary science within neurology. We are incredibly proud to see a member of the IVC Evidensia team be recognised as the first to achieve this qualification and continue to raise the bar in veterinary care and treatment standards.”
