Recently, Crown Vets in Fort William helped Tokyo, a black Labrador, make a full recovery after she was suspected to have eaten cannabis while hiking up a mountain trail.
Owner Christina was making her way up Scotland's highest mountain with Tokyo and her family when the Labrador suddenly became unwell. Several hours into the hike and approaching the summit, Tokyo became unable to walk and began drifting in and out of consciousness.
Christina, a dog trainer from Surrey, was beside herself after her usually active working dog suddenly collapsed. She described the incident as one of the most frightening experiences of her life.
After attempting to carry Tokyo down the mountain, Christina was caught in heavy rain and struggled to manage the weight. She soon called the emergency services, who dispatched Lochaber Mountain Rescue to help carry Tokyo on a stretcher.
Once they reached the bottom, Christina rushed her pet to Crown Vets in Fort William.
At the practice, vets immediately recognised Tokyo’s symptoms were consistent with neurotoxicity. They concluded that she likely had eaten some discarded cannabis on the mountain path.
The team acted swiftly by administering intravenous fluids and treating her with activated charcoal to help reduce toxin absorption.
Thanks to the team’s supportive care, Tokyo made a quick recovery and was able to return home the next day.
“She was wagging her tail very happily and was ready to go. And the day after you wouldn’t have thought that this had happened to her,” Christina said.

We're incredibly proud of the calm, collaborative response from everyone involved, which helped give Tokyo the best possible chance of a successful recovery."

“Following a request to assist a collapsed dog, we’re pleased to confirm that Tokyo has made a full recovery, having been cared for at Crown Vets.
“It’s now suspected that Tokyo, a usually very fit and active working dog, had ingested something that made her critically unwell.
