Dedicated veterinary professionals from IVC Evidensia were honoured at the Burgess Excel Vet Awards recently, scooping both the Guinea Pig Friendly Practice of the Year and the Rabbit Vet Nurse of the Year awards.
Holly House Vets, a group of three Leeds-based practices, scooped the Guinea Pig award and Abi Nell, a vet nurse who works at Mill House Vets in Kings Lynn, won the award for Rabbit Vet Nurse of the Year.
The winners were chosen by a panel of experts including Dr Suzanne Moyes, who was the Rabbit Vet of the Year in 2020, Rae Walters, director of the RWAF, John Chitty, who served as president of the BSAVA in 2017-2018, Dani Sewell who is a communications director specialising in pet/animal welfare, and Dr Sophie Jenkins, who founded Origins Vets in Cardiff.
The judges especially look for an outstanding knowledge of rabbit care and husbandry, alongside a passion for educating the public on how to look after rabbits and guinea pigs correctly at home.
Dr Agata Witkowska from Holly House Vets had this to say regarding their awards win:
“The entire team at Holly House Vets was very humbled to hear we had been nominated for the award and absolutely overjoyed to find out we have won.
“We have been working very hard on developing our exotic animal service over the past few years; ensuring we make guinea pigs as comfortable as possible when hospitalised, constantly reviewing our protocols and undertaking further studies in the field as well as having a hospital that is open 24/7 to be able to look after our patients any time of day or night.”

Abi Nell, winner of Rabbit Vet Nurse of the Year, elaborated on how she felt receiving the award:
“I am really thrilled to have been chosen for this award. I love meeting and connecting with clients; being able to offer tips and advice for the best care for their rabbits is my favourite part of my job.
“When a client calls the practice to ask for my advice instead of relying on an internet search, that is when I know I have really made an impact and developed a relationship with the pet owners.”
