First Equine Colic Symposium lays groundwork for positive future in equine care

June 15, 2022

Earlier this year, equine vets from across IVC Evidensia met to discuss, collaborate and create plans for the future of equine care.

Sponsored by Dechra Pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim, IMV Imaging and Zoetis UK, the very first Equine Colic Symposium took place at the National Football Centre in Staffordshire, where attendees spent two days creating a positive buzz around the future of equine veterinary care.

The Equine Colic Symposium 2022

Day one started with a landmark for IVC Evidensia as it included the first roundtable meeting of the Equine Hospitals Group, with representatives from both the UK and The Netherlands discussing the current challenges facing the industry along with potential blueprints for the next 12 months of equine care.

Presentations were given from Gayle Hallowell, IVC Evidensia’s Director of Veterinary Professional Development, as well as Richard Stephenson, Tim Froydenlund and Marco Duz. They included a detailed discussion of internship plans, resident and specialist provision, and clinical research collaboration.

Day two of the symposium involved a morning of lectures on a variety of clinical topics, including some great discussion points around insurance and charging. The afternoon moved on to Pool House Equine Hospital where 50 equine vets participated in a number of small group practicals, allowing IVC Evidensia equine vets to share the latest techniques that are going on in practices all over the country.

Progress, networking and collaboration

Mark Tabachnik, Clinical Director at IVC Evidensia, shared the following on the enriching two-day event:
“Our first Equine Colic Symposium was a great opportunity to get our talented vets in one space and finally collaborate, communicate and share our successes over the past few years.

“There was such enthusiasm and positivity to create plans for the future of our profession, and it was inspiring to see so many equine vets in one place coming together to share, discuss and learn about new techniques. Collaboration is at the heart of IVC Evidensia as a business and I look forward to the next roundtable discussion.”
