Head Veterinary Receptionist makes history with Vet Record publication

January 16, 2025

Louise Hudson at Glaven Veterinary Practice in Norfolk has made history as the first receptionist to have an article published in Vet Record, the official journal of the British Veterinary Association (BVA).

In her Vet Record publication, Head Receptionist Louise shares her inspiring career journey. From her involvement with pet healthcare projects, to emphasising the importance of customer service, Louise shows her dedication to elevating the profile of receptionists in veterinary care.

Glaven Vets Practice Manager, Sam Anderson, praised Louise for her publication:

"As a practice team, we are immensely proud of Lou and all her achievements. We felt she had lots of experience to support the BVRA and other receptionists, so encouraged her to join. This article is a testament to her hard work".

A Veterinary Receptionist’s Journey to Success

Louise began her career at Glaven Veterinary Practice in 2005 as a cleaner before transitioning into a receptionist role. Coming from a non-veterinary background presented challenges, but Louise’s enthusiasm led her to numerous learning opportunities.

Louise was eager to take on more responsibility, becoming a Pet Health Club Champion and Purina Nutrition Champion, whilst being promoted to Head Receptionist. Most recently she also obtained her International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) qualification as a cat-friendly receptionist.

After learning about the British Veterinary Receptionist Association (BVRA), Louise decided to undertake further training to become a BVRA Accredited Veterinary Receptionist (AVR). After completing bronze, silver, and gold training she was then invited to join the BVRA Council in 2022.

As an active BVRA council member, Louise regularly contributes articles and initiatives that support receptionists across the veterinary industry. Her most recent Vet Record publication is no exception – demonstrating the vital role receptionists play in veterinary practices.

A First for Veterinary Receptionists

Reflecting on her achievement, Louise expressed gratitude for her team and asserted the potential of receptionists everywhere:

“My whole team at Glaven have been so supportive and proud of me. I am very lucky to have the support from the practice to enable me to enrol in a number of courses, which have led me to where I am now.

“I hope to encourage other receptionists to explore the potential in their role, and where things can lead you if you pursue them”
