IVC Evidensia Care Fund supports over 70 animals affected by Valencia floods

December 02, 2024

With the giving season approaching, it’s the perfect time to recognise the compassion and dedication shown by IVC Evidensia teams during the Valencia floods. Through the IVC Evidensia Care Fund, teams were able to step in, providing essential treatment for animals where local clinics became overwhelmed.

Emergency action during the Valencia floods

Following the devastating floods in Valencia, IVC Evidensia took swift action to support affected pets.

From day one, the Spanish team set up a vital lifeline for animals in need of urgent care at practices. Emergency care was also delivered near flood-affected areas and was extended to non-clients, ensuring no pet was turned away.

To aid recovery, the Care Fund was activated, helping to further replace medications lost or damaged during floods. This extra support was paramount in providing treatment for various conditions. These included fractures, infections, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and complications from chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Saving the day, one pet at a time

Among the animals that were saved was Xena, a Rottweiler treated for severe pneumonia at AÚNA Veterinary Specialities. After three days of intensive care, she continued to recover in a foster home with antibiotics and nebulisations. Recently, she returned for follow-up x-rays and is now a happy, healthy dog looking for a family.

The Military Unit RI 50 of Gran Canaria found an injured dog in the river Magro and brought her to Plans Alcalans Clinic. Unfortunately, they were unable to find a microchip, but the veterinary team ensured to deliver the best support and affection. She is now being cared for in a foster home while the team continues efforts to locate her family or rehome her.

Praise all around

The IVC Evidensia UK welfare team was quick to praise the Spanish team’s dedication:

“We wanted to ensure the teams dealing with horrendous conditions on the ground knew they had the backing of our whole group. Thanks to the Care Fund, our teams in Valencia have been able to treat animals injured or made ill by the flooding.

“Every day, I hear incredible stories of their work, and it makes me proud to be part of this organisation.”

“We extend heartfelt thanks to all teams in Spain for their outstanding efforts to support the community during this challenging time,” said Dave Martin, Group Head of Animal Welfare.

The IVC Evidensia Care Fund

The IVC Evidensia Care Fund is an annual allowance that can be accessed by vet professionals and granted to pet owners. The fund provides financial support in cases with good prognosis, but where the cost of treatment is out of reach.

Last year, the Care Fund hit record use, helping support more pets and their owners than ever before. Subsequently, individual funds increased by 25%, allowing vets in the UK £1250 a year to distribute.

This is not the first time IVC Evidensia has mobilised the Care Fund in response to an international crisis. Previously, support was given to pets affected in Ukraine and Afghanistan.
