Excited and nervous! I find it quite difficult to accept any kind of attention, and being one of just four finalists is a pretty big deal, so it felt quite overwhelming.
Tell us about your career journey so far – what brought you to your current role?
I was a manager at my local pub for five years until it was taken over, and I had to find a new job. The role at Terrington came up as a receptionist and, although I didn’t think I’d get it (especially with no veterinary experience), I applied and was delighted to be offered the job! I’m now moving into nursing this September, which I’m extremely excited about.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the veterinary sector?
The head nurse at our practice really inspired me to pursue more within my veterinary career. If anything, I hope to be just like her when I start nursing.
What does a typical day look like for you, and how do you approach your work with patients and clients?
I wear quite a few hats! In addition to being a receptionist, I love being creative—I design and produce all of our display boards and handmake all our sympathy cards using my own designs. I also keep our website up to date and monitor reviews for my manager. I manage stock for our little shop and make sure everything is current and well-presented. One day a week, I help out the clinical team to start building my nursing knowledge ahead of September, where I will begin my nursing training.
What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do?
Meeting people’s little loves and seeing the strong bonds between pets and their owners. I also really enjoy getting stuck in and involved with as much as I can - I’m always looking to learn more and expand my knowledge.
Alongside my role, I’ve had lots of opportunities to help out in the back and observe surgeries, which has been a huge part of my development. I want to know as much as I possibly can. I ask a lot of questions, which helps me understand the different techniques used by vets and nurses, so I can learn which ones suit me best. I love understanding the "why" behind what we do.
What’s the most rewarding part of working with clients and their pets?
Seeing clients leave happy after receiving great service. I also support them during difficult times, like when a pet passes. I do the paw prints and fur keepsakes with clients, and I try to bring a little light and comfort to those moments, so they leave feeling peaceful and know their pet is in safe hands.
How would you describe your team?
Very light-hearted and very supportive - especially during tough times. We always try to lift each other’s spirits - even if that means buying cake for everyone! We check in with one another regularly and step in where we’re needed. Even if it’s just being there with a cup of tea and a chat, there’s a real sense of care and teamwork.
What’s one piece of advice or insight you often find yourself sharing with others?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions or get involved. You learn so much just by being present and curious.
How have you been supported by IVC Evidensia to explore your areas of interest?
They’ve been fantastic - giving me the chance to get involved behind the scenes, shadow surgeries, and learn directly from the clinical team. That support has really encouraged me to pursue my nursing qualification.
Do you have any pets of your own?
Yes - I have a cat called Sparkle. She’s my little black-and-white best friend.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work to relax and recharge?
I love walking on the beach, reading, and doing crafts - it really helps me unwind.
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
Coming up with the idea of creating handmade sympathy cards for the practice. Both my manager and clinical director loved them, and I’ve had lovely feedback from clients too.
What personal values do you carry into your work each day?
Friendliness and politeness - I think they’re key to delivering great client care.
How do your friends or family describe what you do for a living?
They say I work with animals and help people feel better when their pets are unwell or have passed. I think they see me as someone who brings care and kindness to a difficult time.
Are there any personal goals you're currently working towards?
To be the best person I can be - and becoming a veterinary nurse is a huge part of that. I want to put all my love and care into helping animals.
