You’ve been with IVC Evidensia and previously Vets Now over 10 years—what has kept you here, and how has the company supported your growth over that time?
What makes this industry special and IVC in particular is the people. The passion and dedication to our clients, patients and colleagues is second to none. I have been in may leadership roles during my career but in the last 10 years, I have grown as a leader through investment in training and development, working with some of the best leaders in the industry and creating a culture of trust, care and fun across my teams.
Can you walk us through your current role as an Area Director—what does a typical day or week look like for you?
The best part of my job is being in practice with my teams. Sharing ideas, supporting my leadership teams and coaching so we can provide the best care for our patients and the best service for our clients. I look after 10 Practice groups which range from single site practices right through to large 24hour hospitals and Mixed practices. I am responsible for all elements of the area including Clinical governance, colleagues, performance and client care. Supported by my Area support manager, we strive to create a safe, exciting and engaging environment for our teams and our clients.
Mentoring and leadership are a big part of your role—how do you create and maintain a positive, supportive environment across your teams?
This is the most important part of my job. Creating a culture of trust, respect and loyalty is something I take seriously and work incredibly hard to achieve, every day. I have exceptional leaders across my practices, and we work as a team to share our knowledge, solve challenges and create an exciting team to be part of. I hold regular meetings and events with all of my teams both as an area and individually where engagement is high, I recognise outstanding achievement and support collaboration through my own mentorship and peer support.
Looking back over your time at IVC, what has been one of your most rewarding or memorable moments?
Being recognised at the very first Brilliant People Awards for Area Collaboration of the Year, it was the first year after Evolution and was an honour to collect the award with my Area Support Manager, Hannah. All our practice leadership teams were stood on their chairs cheering us on, something I will never forget.
What advice would you give to someone in the veterinary field who is aspiring to move into a leadership position?
Lean into the vast amount of support, training and phenomenal people in this business to achieve your potential. The network of friends, colleagues and mentors I have gained throughout my last 10 years is immeasurable and have shaped the leader I am.
Finally, outside of work, what do you enjoy doing and how do you unwind?
I have 3 beautiful children, a wonderful husband and gorgeous Black Labrador named Max who are my world. I like to sing whenever I can, something I used to do when I was younger and trips to the beach, which is our happy place.
