Could you tell us about yourself and how you came to work at the practice?

My journey into veterinary nursing began in 2016 when I completed a work experience placement during my college years which sparked my passion for animal care. I came to Darley House because they needed someone to cover maternity leave and ended up staying on for a year. I left to complete my nursing qualification at university, but my heart remained with this practice so when they asked me to return, it felt like coming back home.

Can you share what motivated you to pursue a career in the veterinary industry and become a vet nurse?

My lifelong love for animals was the driving force behind my choice to work in this area. Growing up, I was always surrounded by pets, particularly dogs. Initially, I thought I’d like to be a vet surgeon, but circumstances led me to choose vet nursing instead. Looking back now, I couldn't be happier with my decision. Vet nursing allows me to be hands-on, providing essential care and support to the animals I love. It's a deeply fulfilling role.

Could you describe the types of cases you see at the practice?

Our practice covers a wide range of cases and services. We regularly perform routine surgeries, such as neutering and dental procedures – the nurses play an active role in dentals, and we’ve got a brand-new dental machine which is great.

In addition to the routine procedures, we also handle orthopaedic surgeries, including some cruciate repairs and patella issues. These cases require a high level of skill and expertise, and it's a testament to our commitment to comprehensive animal care.

We do seem to often encounter some unique and challenging medical cases that require us to think creatively and work collaboratively to provide the best care possible to our patients when they need it.

Tell me about the practice's clients and the relationships you have with them.

Our clients are a diverse group, but one thing that stands out is the warmth and friendliness that most of them bring to our practice. We have quite a few really sweet elderly clients who adore their pets and are incredibly appreciative of our care. We also have reputable breeders who entrust us with the health and well-being of their animals.

While there can be occasional challenging moments, I can confidently say that our client base is generally wonderful to work with. Building trust and rapport with our clients is an essential part of our job, and it's heartwarming to see the strong bonds they have with their pets.

What's it like to be part of the practice team?

Being a member of this practice's team is special. The atmosphere here is characterised by genuine care and support for one another. What sets us apart from many other practices I've experienced is the maturity and professionalism of our team members. We are committed to providing top-notch care, but we also know how to maintain a positive, friendly, and collaborative work environment.

What support is there for professional development at the practice?

One of the great aspects of working at this practice is the unwavering support for professional development. There's never been a moment where I felt hesitant to ask for help or seek guidance. This collaborative spirit extends from my fellow team members to our clinical director Nick, who has been an incredible mentor throughout my journey. His willingness to listen and provide guidance has been instrumental in my growth as a vet nurse.

What do you like to do in the local area during your free time?

Our practice is conveniently located, with several great places nearby. I have a few favourite activities in the area. I enjoy going fishing, playing football with my nephews, and attending church on Sundays.

Tell us about your pets!

I am a proud owner of 16 dogs. It's quite the pack! Among them, we have Bedlington Whippets and Dachshunds. While some are rescues, we've also bred a few ourselves. In addition to our dogs, we have chickens, rabbits, fish, and even ferrets as part of our family. It's a bustling and lively household, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

That's quite a menagerie! What are you most proud of in your veterinary career so far?

There's so much to be proud of in my veterinary career. If I had to pick one thing, it would be the fact that I overcame the doubts about my academic abilities to become a qualified vet nurse. It was a challenging journey, but I proved to myself and others that determination and passion can overcome any obstacle. It's an accomplishment that I’m proud of.
