An interview with Johanna Moore, winner of the Petplan Practice Manager of the Year 2024

As a finalist in the Practice Manager of the Year category at the Petplan Awards, Johanna Moore focused on the positive contributions she was able to make in her current position at Dave Cumber Vets in Dorset, alongside the amazing team she works with on a daily basis.
And whilst she has been in her current position of Practice Director since September 2023, and Practice Manager for 7 years before that, she never thought she would be in the position of accepting this top award in 2024.
To find out more about the award win and her career up until this point, we sat down with her for a chat:
Congratulations, on receiving your Petplan Award! What does this win mean to you?
I'm so honoured to have received the nominations and this award. It’s amazing that we can get the recognition for all the work that goes on behind the scenes to run a practice.
It means so much to me not only for myself but also for the team to be recognised as well for all the fantastic work and support.
How do you think the award will impact you and your career going forwards?
I hope that winning this award will help me share best practice with other practices and to be able to help on challenging issues such as debt management and delivering a gold customer service standard, to name a few.
Will it change your approach to work in the future?
I think in this line of work, every day you learn something new, and we are having to adapt all the time. I'm not sure that the award will change my approach to work in the future, but it has made me feel more confident in that we must be doing something right within the practice to have received such an award and to have been recognised at this level.
I truly believe that having a happy team and good morale in the workplace is so important. We are always reviewing and looking for ways to improve and deliver a better service across the board and making sure that the whole team are involved in this process really helps.
What’s next for you? Are you working towards anything personally or for the practice in general?
I would like to have the time to work towards my Veterinary Business Management Certificate in the future, but for the practice I have many ideas that I hope to implement over the next 18 months. I don't want to give too much away just yet thought.
What one piece of advice would you give to graduate vets or those thinking of going into veterinary in the future?
That it's one of the toughest but also the most rewarding careers you can choose with amazing people.
