After making significant refurbishments in practice, Castle Vets in Reading have been awarded by the International Society of Feline Medicine with Gold Cat Friendly status.
The award recognises the promotion of specialist facilities that actively reduce stress and anxiety in cats during veterinary visits. The updates have included a new separate entrance for cats, a cat-only waiting area and even cat-only parking outside.
There are now five cat consultation rooms at the clinic with one doubling up as a cat exercise room with relevant equipment housed there. A cat kennels area lead onto cat preparation, cat day-kennels and then cat only theatre.
If that’s not all, the new facilities are kept completely separate from dog-only areas, keeping stress and anxiety for any felines visiting the clinic to an absolute minimum.
All of the upgrades have been designed and installed adhering to specific guidelines from the ISFM in order to qualify for Gold Cat Friendly status. It means that they have the highest level of adaptation for cats visiting the clinic and the staff at Castle Vets have also been specially trained in feline handling.
Dr Katy Slatford, Clinical Director at Castle Vets, said:
“We’ve been working towards this accreditation for a while and we’re so proud to finally announce the news that we’re a Gold Cat Friendly Clinic."
Kirsten Mitchell, Practice Manager at Castle Vets, commented:
“This is a project that our head nurse, Laura Rowley, and our fear free trained vet, Dr Lucy Chivers, have been working towards. The team have been instrumental in making our clinic cat-friendly and fostering a welcoming environment in practice for any feline in our local community. We can’t wait to welcome even more cats to Castle Vets and are looking forward to what the future holds.”
